STAR Students - Enoch (Chi Tak) So: Bachelor of Engineering in Bioinformatics

WAM

What program did you study at UNSW and what is your current role?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Bioinformatics (Computing, Biotechnology and Statistics) with First Class Honours and University Medal as well as a Diploma in Innovation Management (Science Commercialisation). I am currently working as a Business Analyst at AstraZeneca, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

What are your career aspirations?
It is a difficult question to answer at this stage but I would like to serve the business side of the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, and more importantly make a difference to the industry and the society.

What do you think employers are looking for?
I will put it in the simplest way. I believe an employer looks for graduates who can learn, contribute and are passionate about the role they are applying for. High Distinctions and executive roles in a society are only minor bonuses.

What work experience have you had?
My first work experience was with the Faculty of Engineering in my 2nd year where I worked as a Bioinformatics Summer Research Intern as part of the Faculty’s Taste of Research Summer Scholarship Scheme. I worked for CSIRO as a Summer Research Intern in my 3rd year and subsequently diverted my focus from research to commerce in my 4th year. I took the role of a Biotechnology Equity Research Analyst for an investment firm, eG Capital. During this period, I also undertook a part-time Website Administrator and Developer role for the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science (BABS) for 18 months.

What extra-curricular activities have you been involved in?
I was one of the committee members of BinfSOC (Bioinformatics Society). I was also a member of the Karate team in my earlier years and represented UNSW in inter-university competitions. It was one of the most enjoyable memories in my university life.

How would you describe the job application process you went through? What have you learnt from it?
It was very tough, especially when the business analyst role offered was specifically designed for experienced candidates. I had a total of three interviews, a case study exam as well as a 3-hour personality and capability test before convincing my employer that I was a worthy candidate for the position despite the lack of experience. The success in my application was due to the lessons that I have learnt from my failed attempts as well as the kind aid from the consultants in the Careers Office.
My only advice for potential applicants is to be positive and develop a key relationship with your interviewer within the short span of the interview. It is hard, but it is critical.

What is your advice to current students?
Enjoy your university life, be positive and 'Think Ahead'.
