STAR Students - Cynthia Ho: Bachelor of Commerce/Law

WAM

What program are you studying at UNSW and why did you choose it?
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Commerce / Law at UNSW. Besides having a strong interest in those fields, I also chose it because of the wide range of subjects studied which has given me a broad knowledge and skills base, as well as a variety of career options. Also, the 2 to 3 day a week timetable allowed me to pursue other passions and interests!

What are your career aspirations?
Initially, I would like to work in finance or consulting but ultimately, I would like to start my own business/company someday.

What work experience have you had?
I recently completed a 10 week summer internship at an investment bank, working in corporate finance. I am the co-principal and co-founder of a dance school, "DanceArts" which specialises in hip-hop and contemporary styles. For the past two years, my partner and I have been managing the business and teaching at the school. I have also held other part-time jobs during my degree including medical receptionist, office assistant at a mining company, waitress and jewellery sales assistant!

How have you been involved in extra curricular activities?
I was President of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), leading a group of students in carrying out university and community outreach projects including producing "Frugal" a financial literacy magazine and website for students, conducting "Women in Careers" workshops and running the "SIFE Enterprize Challenge". I represented UNSW at 2 SIFE national competitions in Melbourne and the SIFE/HSBC Financial Literacy Forum in Toronto last year. I have also been involved in the D2MG Hip-Hop Society, AIESEC, Law Revue and Yellow Shirts.

What skills have you developed through these activities?
Communication, teamwork and leadership skills; project and organisational management skills; public speaking and presentation skills.

What do you think employers are looking for?
I think employers are looking beyond university grades and technical skills for well-balanced individuals with good communication, teamwork and inter-personal skills. This can be demonstrated through part-time jobs and involvement in extra-curricular activities. I think that creativity, initiative and enthusiasm are attributes that are also highly valued.

What advice do you have for prospective or current students?
Get out there and become involved in clubs and societies on campus – you’ll gain many practical skills which can’t be learnt in the classroom, meet new people and possibly get to travel to new places. It’s not all about assignments, exams and marks – the other activities and pursuits in your life are just as important to prospective employers – remember to never lose sight of the bigger picture!
