Michael Kogan is currently completing a Bachelor of Commerce / Science at UNSW. After surviving a competitive recruitment process he secured a two month internship with an investment bank.

What did you do in your internship?
I saw how things are done on the 'other side' and worked with the very talented people at the investment bank. My main responsibility was to develop courses on Financial Mathematics and Statistics, which required me to create PowerPoint slides and Excel exercises. Later on I was also responsible for developing risk management calculators. Extending what had previously been only theory, to more complex real-world problems, was both exciting and enjoyable..

What helped you to gain an internship?
I believe that my resume (developed with the help of UNSW Careers) and academic performance helped me get an interview. While my confidence and honesty in the interview helped me get the job.

What program at UNSW are you completing and why did you choose it?
I do Commerce/Science majoring in Actuarial Studies and Pure Mathematics. I chose my degree because of my love for mathematics and to gain financial education.

What are your career aspirations?
I hope to utilise my skills in actuarial science and mathematics, together with the skills I will acquire in the workplace, to one day run my own company.

What other employment experience have you had?
I have had a few jobs over the years. I went from delivering flyers, to working in McDonalds, to being a Junior Bookkeeper in a small clothing manufacturer and finally becoming a Tutor of mathematics and economics.

Have you had time for any extra curricular involvement at UNSW?
Last year I had the great pleasure of working with the UNSW solar car team. I also enjoy playing cricket and soccer on campus.

What do you think employers are looking for?
Employers are looking for young individuals who are quick learners and can work well in any environment or situation.
