STAR Students - Master of Commerce: Kevin Chong
Kevin Chong
completed his Master of Commerce at the end
of 2005. He has been successful in securing
a graduate position in the Melbourne office
of Deloitte to start in 2006.
What was your educational background prior to the Master of Commerce?
I studied a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne between 2002 and 2004, where I specialised in both Accounting and Finance.
What do you think employers are looking for?
I feel that technical competence (proven by reasonably good to excellent results, depending on the type of employer) is the first thing they look for, but it is the soft skills that help set an applicant apart from all the others. Employers look for candidates with good teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Most importantly they need to feel that you can fit in within the organisation, so ‘clicking’ with your interviewer is a very important factor.
What work experience have you had?
During my MCom study, I worked as a Research Assistant at UNSW School of Banking and Finance. It has given me the opportunity to obtain an insight into the real world of finance and accounting, as well as giving me a first-hand look at what some of my subjects are really about. Before this I worked in customer service at a restaurant and a mobile phone repairs shop. While completing my undergraduate degree I also tutored students privately in my spare time.
What extra-curricular activities have you been involved in?
I took part in the Students In Free Enterprise’s (SIFE) Enterprise Challenge. I was part of a team that organised an entrepreneurship competition for university students which was sponsored by Unilever, Innovation Xchange and UNSW Careers and Employment.
What is your advice to current Master of Commerce students?
I presume most people are doing this course looking for a career change, or to increase their marketability in the job market. Studying and getting good grades are important; however I think part-time work and/or extra-curricular activities are equally important. The MCom attracts local and international students from places such as Europe, North/South America and Asia. Take advantage of this opportunity, socialise and build your networks.
