  • To explain any confusing discrepancies in your background (eg Engineer seeking a finance position or career change)
  • To let recruiters know exactly what are your areas of interest
  • To capture the imagination of the reader - to stand out
  • To improve your chances of being interviewed

Education (View Sample)

  • Most recent qualifications first
  • The full and offical name of your degree (in bold)
  • The full name of the institution at which this took place (University, TAFE College, High School)
  • A brief outline of the knowledge and skills gained in each qualification that are relevant to the position
  • Your achievement in each course, if it is positive - e.g. a credit average, prize, scholarship
  • Relevant Projects: If you are working in a highly skills-based area or a field where there is a great deal of project work, you may wish to include this section. You should detail each relevant, practical project you have undertaken listing the skills you developed during the project.
  • Your UAI - if it is positive

See our section on employability skills. Analyse the role, organisation and industry you are applying for. List 3-5 of the most important skills and attributes relevant to the position. For example:

    Provide examples of your skill both in accounting procedures such as general ledger, cash books, using computerised accounting packages and what you used them for. Also describe any accounting functions using spreadsheet packages such as MS Excel.

Socialising with friends, going to the movies, dining out and reading do not add value.


Referees (View Sample)
You can say "Professional and academic referees available on request" if you do not want this confidential information revealed too early in the process.

A referee is someone who knows the quality of your work. Make sure you have asked the referee before you include their name and supply them with a copy of your application. You will need at least TWO, perhaps one employment and one academic. You need to include the person's name, their position, company name, and their contact number and email if possible.


Other Possible Headings (View Sample)
Depending on the purpose of your resume, you may also wish to include information such as:

  • Other Relevant Training
    Courses that you have attended (e.g. Bar, Public Speaking). Include the year, the name of the organisation who trained you and any relevant skills/knowledge gained.

  • Publications
    This section is useful for those who are entering a research or academic career. You can be include this section in the resume if it is short enough or it can be added as an attachment.
