Interview Presentation
Generally for graduate positions, a business suit is most
appropriate. However, organisations have different standards
of dress. It may be useful to find out the standard dress code
and aim for a notch or two higher for interviews. Better to
err on the side of conservatism rather than dressing too
casually.
You already have their attention and they already value your
skills and experience. The interview is your chance to
continue to impress them. What you say and how you present
are more important than what you wear, however, you need
to create a positive and professional impression to give
yourself a competitive edge.
Research corporate images, photographs and successful
employees as a guide to dressing appropriately. Note: some
employers may have a written dress code which may
be available from their Human Resources department.
Polish your shoes. Brush your teeth before the interview.
Don't wear too much perfume or after shave as the interviewer
may feel suffocated or disturbed by it.
Clothes
A suit is preferable, however, employers understand that a
student may not be able to afford an expensive outfit. Choose
styles and colours that do not distract others and that are
not distracting for you. They should fit well, be in good
repair, and be neatly pressed. Some employers may prefer
women to wear a skirt/dress suit. Check with the Human
Resources department if you are not sure.
Accessories
Keep all electrical accessories (phone, organiser, pager etc)
out of sight and turned off. Turn off watch alarms. Shoes,
belts and bags should be clean and in good repair. Shoes
should be practical and comfortable (avoid stillettos and
sandals with socks). Check that your heels are not worn.
Less is best for jewellery, bags, scarves and hair accessories.
Ties, generally, should be professional and conservative.
Avoid garish, humorous and stained ties.
Grooming
Clean, neat and simple. Pay attention to possible details
such as loose hair, chipped nail polish and dirty fingernails.
Wear pressed clothes, and appropriate accessories and/or makeup.
Check that your clothes fit well. Make sure that any
aftershave/perfume you wear is not overpowering as some
people are quite sensitive to these products.
Hair
Ensure your hair is clean, and neatly styled for a
corporate look.
