Applying for Jobs

If you are preparing a job application we have a number of resources that may help.

Step 1. Understand what Employers are Seeking

Develop the skills and attributes employers value. Read some Employers’ Perspectives on:

Be prepared for the recruitment process:

  • Recruitment advice from three successful students
Getting that top job requires preparation – months, even years. Thus the best approach to recruitment is to be organised and plan well ahead. But if you haven’t been as organised as you should have been and you need last minute advice, there is still hope!

Management Consulting by Ross Eaton – Graduate at Mercer Oliver Wyman and Elizabeth Adams – Graduate at Port Jackson Partners
Step 2. Finding Job Opportunities

Read our articles on researching job opportunities. We have information on conducting basic research, networking, and informational interviewing.

Step 3. Writing your Application

If you have a job that you wish to apply for, we have resources and samples to help you write your application.

Start by reading our Analysing a Job article which will help you determine what things you need to include in your job application. Then, look through our major job application sections to gain information on:

  • Cover Letters
  • Resumes
  • Selection Criteria
  • Submitting your Academic Transcript
    Transcript Information: Click here
Note: an employer may also accept an unofficial transcript in the first instance and if you are offered a position they may require an official version. You can download your Academic Statement from your Student Profile in myUNSW.
  • You can ask Student Central for an Awards Statement Letter: which confirms that a student has satisfied academic requirements for a program of study. The awards statement also confirms a student’s specialisation and honours level where applicable, date of completion and date of graduation ceremony.

Each section contains explanations of how to develop appropriate materials, and online samples that you can view or download.

Before submitting your application review our Winning Applications checklist to ensure you have covered everything.

Step 4. The Interview

If you have been asked to an interview, or vocational assessment exam, our interview resources may be helpful. Covered are interviews, sample questions and answers, psychological testing and case studies.

Step 5. After the Application

After the job application, there are still a few steps before accepting a offer. You may be lucky enough to need to evaluate competing offers from multiple firms, or if you have been unsuccessful, you may wish to seek feedback from the employer on how you can enhance subsequent applications. You can see our articles in the post application section.
